If you are working now, chances are you already know how to network. Others see networking as annoying or even self-serving but you have to realize that it is not a practice of using other people or promoting yourself – it is all about building a connection. Many Singaporeans see networking as intimidating but you have to realize that it can be rewarding at the end of the day.

If at this point in time you are thinking about switching job, the good news is that the network you established might help you. Networking is the most efficient way to look for a job. Here are some tips on building network to find the right job:

  • Make a list of people within your network: Always think that you know many people and there is a possibility that these people will nudge you to the right path or job opening in this case. You will be surprised to know that you have a big network. Unless you won’t ask them, you will not be pointed to a career or job opening.

  • Reach out: Sometimes you have to reach out and not be too proud about not needing help. No one will know your situation if you do not tell them about it. Now that you made a list of the people you know, it is time that you start making contact. While doing this, do not forget to be specific. Do not assume that some won’t help. However, you need to figure out first what you want to do.

  • Focus on the relationship: Relationship should be a give and take relationship. After making the connection and sharing information, do not just leave your contacts in the air. Remember that it is all about relating not getting a favor.

  • Maintain your network: Many people lose contact after getting what they want. You should not do the same. It is important that you maintain your network not only for future reference but to gain more insights and thoughts as you go along with your life. It will not hurt you to spend time with your contacts or network especially if it can benefit both of you. Always find ways to reciprocate.
